What Are Helper Springs?

Load-assist helper springs are heavy-duty air springs meant to help alleviate common issues found with traditional coil or leaf spring suspensions.

Why Do You Need Helper Springs?

Many manufacturers use either traditional coil or leaf spring suspension configurations. Both are reliable, providing comfort, safety, and stability for empty and fully loaded pickup trucks. Manufacturers develop suspension solutions based on average loads. There are a wide range of load conditions to be accounted for and tested to meet technical requirements and comply with existing legislation for all load conditions.

This does, however, come with drawbacks.

  • The suspension may be too strong when empty which can significantly lessen the ride comfort.
  • The suspension may also be too weak to handle permanently loaded vehicles. In the long term, this can lead to overstressing the suspension, causing premature wear and an uncomfortable ride.
  • “Sag”: The extra weight from some load can cause the rear of the truck to lower, temporarily altering the vehicle’s suspension geometry. With the backend lowered, the front end raises and can obscure the driver’s visibility of the road.
